Bloomers became a symbol of women’s rights when the 1850’s suffragist Amelia Bloomer became infamous for wearing pantaloons long enough to stick out from under her shortened skirt. Quel Scandale! The term Bloomer later became synonymous with underwear bloomers which were originally full-cut pantaloons. By the late 1890s bicycling for ladies become all the rage and the pantaloon bloomers got shorter and shorter!
